Gosh, repairing a stich n glue. Yeah, he might be happier just getting the plans and making a new one. Keeping the sails, mast rigging etc. and just rebuilding the hull, my guess is that he would probably spend just a bit more, but have a better overall end product. But sentimental value-wise, I guess that it is not the same. Reminds me of the quote "The blade has been replaced once and the handle three times, but it is George Washington's axe..."
Yeah, he can do the repair without any problems (all the more true as the forces in play won't be all that large) at all. Just be sure to do the repair correctly. Found a nice page at http://www.storerboatplans.com/Faq/fastrepair.html
