Does anybody know how to find out what company built a lightning sailboat, hull #9212 ??

The lightning class web site has a directory of boats from #1 - 14XXXX.   I don't think they identify the builder.  I have owned several Lighnings myself, and it is very rare that some sort of manufacturers label is not present.  Have you looked thoroughly under the aft deck at the inside of the transom?

From memory, I think I know nearly all the companies that bult Lightnings at this time. (in the US)
(though if it's wood, I can't be sure. Most builders had switched to FG at around hull #9000)
Allen Boat Co.
Lippencott Boat Co.
Newport Boat Co.
Nichols & Holman (later became Nichols Boat Works??)
Eichenlaub
There were a few others that 'finished' boats and sold them under their own brand name.
