Boat Type: Sailstar Meteor 14' daysailor

« on: October 07, 2009, 06:56:13 am »

Looking at the Sailstar list of boats produced, I found my 1964 Meteor is missing from the list.  Right between the 14' Tallstar and 11' Little Bear, Sailstar made a 14' Meteor.  I have one, and absolutely love the little thing.  A few of us Sailstar owners have started a Yahoo site to share info on our boats - we found several old sales brochures from the '60s we've posted - that's where I learned the identity of my boat.

Pics of my Meteor may be viewed on my homepage at:

I've seen your excellent group, and know of the Meteor, but can't find any reliable dimensions for it.  Do you know when it was first built? Does anyone have a brochure or anything ? There was a Pioneer also. I think it was the keel version of the Explorer but It must not have been a big seller because I haven't seen any mention of it anywhere.
History of the company (before it was bought by one of the Pearson cousins) is also hard to find.
Normally I don't list groups without a Fqdn in my 'owner group' database.  But I'm thinking of changing that policy.
Thank for taking the time to check in.

Hi Randy,
We've surmised they started making the Meteor in 1964 - only info we have is a '64 sales brochure scan and that's the first time the Meteor shows up and it has "NEW" on the photo.  Sharing close-up photos between our yahoo-group members, we think the Tallstar-14 and Meteor-14 shared the same hull mold, but had a different cabin-top - mine's wide open, and the Tallstar has a small cuddy and a rear deck with motor-well.  Mine's not self-bailing, the Tallstar is (wah!).

I think we have one Pioneer owner in our group - I'll hunt for photos.

I can email you the images we've got on the Meteor as well as any other brochures we've collected scans of.

Great site you have by the way!

Thanks Dave.
I think I have the Tallstar. I'll have to look. One other Sailstar mystery:
I have something on the Corinthian, but believe there was also a centerboard version called the Conquest?? Don't know much about that one either.
If there is anything here, drawings or anything that you guys can use, (which I doubt), be my quest.

Thanks Randy - I've been all over your site looking for Sailstar info - we are sort of an obscure brand (well - maybe old and obsolete?)

We have one Conquest owner - Bonnie who uses a screen name of abonniescott - I seem to recall corresponding with her a few years ago and she's Scottish.)  Sails on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota.
I need to get her photo moved to another website so I can link it to your forum messages, but on the yahoo page it's at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sailstar/photos/album/438950702/pic/5537984/view?picmode=original&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&dir=asc

I've looked for Bonnie's email address with no luck - I'll send her a message on the yahoo group to see if she'll contact you with info on her boat.

It's not that clear but you can find things by builder:

I just looked at you description of the Tallstar vs. Meteor. The drawing I have for the Tallstar shows an open cockpit with no cuddy. Perhaps this boat actually became the Meteor!  The drawing came from the 'design' section in a old Yachting Magazine.
Did you have a look at this:
