Hi. I just purchased a Compac 16, a liitle sailboat. I noticed that mast hinges between upright or aft, with a single mainstay holding mast upright. So, the ONLY thing kerping mast from falling backwards onto me and grandkids is that one stay – attached by a single medium sized shackle. Seems a bit dangerous. Thought about adding a secondary stay line, but not sure where to attach, and whether it would interfere with furling jib on the existing stay.

    Any thoughts?

The forestay and shrouds should be cable. If the cables and shackles are in good condition and tensioned properly it is a pretty standard setup. How many thousands of 420s are there out there with the same configuration?

Might get a quicker answer for something that specific on the Com-pac Owners association: https://cpyoa.com/forum/index.php
