I’m heading out to look at a used Force 5 sailboat.

What do I need to look for to avoid getting stuck with a problem?  Especially interested in how to easily tell if a hull is waterlogged or weakened.

    Thanks.

Tapping the hull and deck with a mallet (the plastic handle of a screwdriver also works) should provide a steady “ding” noise each time it hits. If the sound changes to “thunk” it indicates a possible area of delamination, which could be a problem. Crazing in the gelcoat can also indicate weak spots. Cracks around or in the mast step can mean leaks.

RE: What to look for Force 5 Sailboat.  New sails feel stiff and crisp.  As sails get older they feel soft and limp.  Look at the under side of the boat for damage from running aground with the Dagger board down.  The damage usually can be seen in the aft end of the slot in the hull where the dagger board is raised and lowered.  Also look at the stern where the rudder and tiller attach.  It is not uncommon to see damage to the hardware on the transom where the rudder attaches.  Sometimes it pulls out and is not repaired correctly and can leak.  ==  Rick Upson,  Rick’s Small Sailboats LLC, Tallahassee, Florida
