John Illingworth
1903 - 1980
Often called the founding father of modern ocean racing, John Illingworth's speciality was the design of rigs and deck plans, and maximizing a yacht's interior space. An outstanding ocean racing skipper, he was an early experimenter with the masthead cutter rig, and was also a strong advocate for building ocean racers smaller, lighter, and less expensively.
