Fractional Sloop
A trimaran of the signature Farrier folding type designed to be built of plywood by the amature builder.
An eighth, slightly modified California 32 was built in Hong Kong in 1965.
S&S design #539. (The first post war S&S design.)
After this first version, the PILOT class went through a number revisions. (A second version was introduced in 1959)
This version, drawn by Aage Nielsen, an S&S employee at the time, was the most popular before the introduction, in 1962, of the slightly larger HINCKLEY PILOT 35 (S&S #1727), designed specifically for fiberglass construction.
First built by Fisher Boat Works in Detroit, MI, (sometimes called FISHER PILOT 33) and later by Thomas Knutson in Huntington, NY.
The original plans showed a Gray Marine gas engine for auxiliary power.

In 1969, a request from the Royal Dutch Yachting Union was made for a new, offshore one design class.
The PION was selected over several other designs submitted.
Having been built by a number of different yards over the years, strict uniformity has not been maintained though class racing still continues.

When Gloucester Yachts purchased the molds for the BUCCANEER 18 in the mid 1980’s, they renamed it the GLOUCESTER 18.
