Originally called the LASER SB3, it was built in Malaysia and sold by Laser Performance under licence from the designer until 2012.
Class rules specify a crew weight limit and prohibit hiking.
It is thought that more than 700 boats have been built.
First built in marine ply. A round bilged, fiberglass version was built some time later.
Spin area: 378sf
2 draft settings: 1.75m/5.74′ or 1.45m/4.76′.
Built in Australia but sold in many countries. Some were imported to the US.
Seen in a later catalog (1987) from Luger Industries (USA), so it’s possible they imported them.
Thanks to ‘catinthehat’ for providing updated information.
One of the earliest and most successful beach catamarans from Australia. Many of the earlier boats were sold to resort hotels, sailing schools, etc.
The original builder was J & S Fiberglass until 1982. The manufacturing rights where then taken over some time later by Mariglass (Seawind Catamarans??) until the mid nineties. Later boats were built by Ross Guinea of Brisbane (Brisbane Catamaran Centre).
A few modifications to the original design have been made over the years to keep the cost down. The rear beam and the traveller track were integrated into one extrusion and a one-piece trampoline replaced the original two piece version. The small cruising jib however, was replaced with a larger racing jib.
Still in production as of 2008.
Most often raced in the following configurations:
Class A Cat or UNA rigged single handed.
Class B Sloop rigged double handed.
Class C Supersloop with trapeze, sloop rigged single handed.
Originally commissioned and developed by Steve and Doris Colgate for use at their sailing schools.
A number have also been sold to US Coast Guard, US Navy, and Maine Maritime Academies for both instruction and intercollegiate competition.
Waterline Systems became the Colgate 26 builder in 2020.
A shoal draft version is also available:
Draft: 3.5′
Disp.: 2800 lbs.
Bal.: 1250 lbs.
Prior to 2005, sail area was reported as 283 sqft.
