S&S Design # 1903. Some hulls were sold to Henry Hinckley Co, where they were fitted with a different deck and sold as the HINCKLEY 38.
Salient differences from HUGHES 38-1:
‘T’ shaped cockpit, tall rig option, and number of changes to the interior.
With the change of company ownership at this time, a name change to NORTH STAR 38.

There were a number of other variants of this particular design including the SIGMA 36 by Cheoy Lee.
Originally designed to the RORC handicap rule, the rig was changed in order to rate more favorably under the newly adopted IOR.
This was the first ‘Swan’. Ole Enderlein was hired (by Nautor) to design a new interior.

Hulls molded by Älvdalen Plastic (SWE). The MkII version was introduced in 1975 which was longer and had a taller rig.
