We have purchased a 43 CC Morgan that has an external roller furling on the mast. An aftermarket addition for sure. As the mainsail is over 15 years old and desperately needs replacing I am looking for opinions and comments on whether to return to a mainsail attached to the mast or keep the roller furling setup. I understand that the furling setup is convenient, but I am looking more for performance than convenience. Do the two setups have similar performance?

This seems like one of those questions where you will find answers from people on both sides. For my money, furling mains do not offer the performance that full mains do. They are flatter and smaller, at least the ones that furl in the mast are. If it were me, I’d get a full, battened main and a lazy jack (unless you have crew to help flake the sail).
