I owned a Hurley 20 in the mid-1970’s when living on the Isle of Wight where the Solent tides really raced. A Yamaha 8hp pushed us along very well indeed. I owned another outboard – an Ailsa Craig 4hp – and I gave that a go. It did the job but not so quickly. The much lighter weight and better fuel economy were attractive, as was the air cooling. No impellers to worry about was a bonus.

As Shakespeare would have said, “Much ado about nothing”. The complaint and the considered response were interesting to read. Sailboat data offers priceless facts and figures and is superb reference for prospective purchasers. The odd anomaly is extremely rare and I applaud this site’s diligence in producing exceptional reference. I’m searching for a bigger sailboat and I’m regularly checking ballast / displacement ratios.
I think Bruce’s qualified response to cptstarz’s understandable observation was great reading.

I think this site provides excellent indicators but no-one’s perfect. Human error is unavoidable and incorrect draft and displacement numbers are inevitable. Yachting magazines are not great with some reviews I’ve read when pounds and kilograms and feet and metres figures defy logic. The data freely provided here is invariably accurate and is often at odds with the specifications produced (perhaps using the pin method) by brokers. I respectfully suggest that a lot more research should be undertaken before compiling a short-list or making appointments to view. This site is a great start, nearly always. Good luck with finding the perfect boat, hopefully close by.

There’s a super looking 1981 Bowman 49 ketch for sale at Gulf Harbour Marina, Hibiscus Coast, Auckland through Gulf Group Marine Brokers. I’d be keen if I could park it somewhere! The asking price is NZ$210k and she’s been in the same ownership since 1984. I suspect their knowledge of Bowman 49s will be extensive. Good luck.
